Welcome
Today, debates about abortion are carried out in two distinct frameworks: as an ethical or political
issue, and as a matter of public health. Abortion is seen as both a moral matter on which society
should take a view, and as a personal, practical solution to an individual woman's unwanted
pregnancy. This conference aims to bring the two discussions into one arena.

This meeting is a unique opportunity to share views on the current controversies, and to learn
about advances in how services can be delivered. We are delighted that the Rt. Honourable Dawn
Primarolo, MP, Minister of State for Public Health is able to join us to open the conference and we
look forward to welcoming you to the debate.

Ann Furedi, CEO, bpas
